UPCEA publishes research article by Linda Glessner and Denise Gillis in annual journal

A research article by Dr. Linda L. Glessner, CIE’s executive director, and Denise Gillis, CIE’s researcher in residence, has been published in the 2012 edition of the Continuing Higher Education Review (CHER). The peer reviewed journal, published annually by Harvard University, is the annual professional journal of the University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA). Its mission is to publish articles of relevance to issues of national and international importance in continuing and higher education.

Glessner and Gillis’ article, entitled “The Knowledge Product Lifecycle and the Strategic Dashboard,” explores efforts “to define a new paradigm for continuing education.” The article is based on Glessner and Gillis’ research to evaluate professional “knowledge products” and services in CIE.

Glessner and Gillis describe how CIE worked to create a tool to assess the effectiveness and relevance of its “knowledge products” by employing research and concepts detailed in the publication “Blue Ocean Strategy” by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne.

Glessner and Gillis then created a dashboard matrix to examine CE enterprise units as business entities using Product Lifecycle Management practices. The resulting matrix can enable education enterprises to identify marketable business opportunities where gaps in learning and educational programming may currently exist. These dual strategies are being implemented “to redefine the value-add role of CIE as a division of the parent university.”
