As business in the 21st century becomes more and more project-based, we are increasingly charged to see projects through from beginning to end, often times with fewer resources, greater risks, and aggressive deadlines. In order to succeed in this world of projects, one must have solid project management skills.

CIE’s Professional Development Center (PDC) offers "Managing Projects", a dynamic two day course taught by Lindsay Chamberlain, MLIS, PMP© which focuses upon essential skills to help you guide projects from start to finish in a timely, cost-effective manner. Aligned with the Project Management Institute’s© Project Management Book of Knowledge, this course’s practical focus makes it valuable for professionals at any experience level.

In this course, Lindsay emphasizes key principles of effective project management that are essential to building a reasonable plan, managing the project team, activities and risks, and delivering results that addresses business needs. These principles include:

  • Understanding the project environment: Projects don’t happen in a vacuum. It might be nice to dream that they could, but the reality is every project manager has to understand the project environment in order to create a realistic plan for project completion. This includes recognizing what is happening around us that might affect the project--everything from corporate culture and politics to international time zones and holidays. Critically evaluate the world you live in and ask, “How might this affect my project?”
  • Managing change: Unmanaged change is one of the leading causes for projects to run over budget, to fall off of schedule and to deteriorate team morale. While change is a fact of life—and will most certainly occur within any project—we must guard against the negative results of unmanaged change. Carefully evaluate the effects of changes on the entire project with regard to the schedule, cost, quality, and team. Seek to understand and clearly communicate changes before incorporating them into the project goals. By carefully and consistently managing change requests, the project manager protects the project’s goals and increases the potential for success—even in a climate of heavy change.
  • Acknowledging and planning for risk: Uncertain events that can have an effect on our project lurk everywhere. There is risk associated with technology, personnel, the economy, even the weather! If an unplanned risk event occurs in a project, the potential for project failure increases substantially. With all this risk around, it’s amazing any project gets completed successfully. But effective project managers understand that risk isn’t something to fear; it is simply something to manage. Identifying potential risks to your project and planning a response for them if they occur is a giant step toward bringing your project to its successful conclusion.
