To thunderous applause, Jerri Oreson, senior administrative associate at the University of Texas-University Charter School (UT-UCS), was presented with the Truly Outstanding Performance (TOP) Award by Dean Judy Ashcroft at CIE’s Holiday Party. The UT-UCS staff was well-represented at the gathering, all wearing burnt orange polo shirts, to support their star player. The applause was loud and long as Jerri approached the podium to accept her well-earned award from Dean Ashcroft.

The party was held December 2, 2010 in the "Under the Oaks" dining area of the Thompson Conference Center. This year, staff members were encouraged to donate board games for the residential students of the UT-UCS. Playing board games was also on the party agenda as staff members could be seen playing Scattergories, Taboo, Scrabble and an assortment of other games throughout the room. At the end of the party, 111 new board games were counted as donations to UT-UCS.

The TOP award recognizes staff members who have significantly improved customer service either within or outside the university, and significantly improved a business process or increased the efficiency of an operation or unit. In recognition of this award, Jerri received a framed certificate, a check for $500, two-days off that won’t count as vacation or sick days, and a lunch at the UT Club with Dean Ashcroft and UT-UCS’ Program Manager Gwyn Boyter and Program Coordinator Susan Crumpley.

"I'm just thrilled and so appreciative to be nominated and to win the award," said Jerri. When asked what she likes most about working at UT-UCS, Jerri replied, "I like that it's an environment that allows you to grow. I've learned so much there because I've been encouraged to try new things and to broaden my skill set." In her position, Jerri provides senior administrative support to UT-UCS’ Special Education department. She also acts as Webmaster for her district.

Among her many accomplishments, Jerri earned the TOP Award by exhibiting a commitment to customer service by developing an automated system that allowed over 200 UT-UCS staff to register online for a staff conference. This system made the sign-in process for the conferences much smoother. Additionally, the system pre-printed rosters for the presenters allowing them to better tailor the conference to the audience.

Jerri continually demonstrates master organization skills. Over the past two years, Terri has also made great strides toward helping UT-UCS move toward being a paperless system. Jerri has worked tirelessly to convert paper documents to electronic formats insuring that all items are properly converted without error. This change has allowed UT-UCS to assure that students’ records are sent to their new schools the day the school district requests records.

Jerri also took on a redesigning the UT-UCS Web site. She has created a design that will link staff to important information and documents that have not been available before.

Also at the holiday party, Jessica Perea of University Extension was presented with a Career Smart "Transition to Management” certificate from Dean Ashcroft. This certificate represented 53 hours of professional development classes taken by Jessica to help her go from “individual contributor” to “manager.” This coursework is designed to give professionals even greater skill to motivate others, manage and measure work, and comply with policies and procedures at the university, among other managerial competencies.

Congratulations to both Jerri and Jessica!
