Road Scholars

Road Scholar offers lifelong learners opportunities for study and travel

Road Scholar is America’s foremost education and travel organization, providing adult learners with opportunities to travel while learning about history, nature, music, art and much more. Started in 1975, Road Scholar offers nearly 10,000 programs throughout the United States and in more than 90 countries around the world. Continuing & Innovative Education (CIE) has hosted Road Scholar on our campus and in the Austin community for 20 years. Last year, 1,700 adult learners took part in a Road Scholars course through CIE.

In 2010, the national Road Scholar organization changed its name from Elderhostel to Road Scholar in effort to focus more on participants' goals to explore the world and learn more about global traditions, cultures, arts, and ideas. The name change was also intended to reflect the more upscale accommodations and service offered—rather than a no frills “hostel”—and to open the organization up to younger members. The age limitations used to be for adults over 55, now it’s available to anyone over the age of 21.

Road Scholars programs currently offered through CIE include explorations of Austin’s music scene, Houston’s fine arts featuring the Houston Symphony Orchestra, and the rich Spanish culture of San Antonio. CIE’s Road Scholar also offers trips to major US cities throughout the south and midwest.

Road Scholar recently announced upcoming programs open for registration through CIE:

  • Kentucky Derby History and Celebration, a five night stay in Lexington, Kentucky where participants will be immersed in the history, traditions, and behind the scenes life of the Kentucky Derby. The course will run from April 27-May 2, 2010.
  • Kansas City Here I Come: Fine Arts in the Heartland, a five night stay in Kansas City, Missouri, to soak in the arts, jazz, architecture and history of this sophisticated city. This course will take place May 9-14, 2010 and again September 26-October 1, 2010 and October 17-22, 2010.

Coming soon to this blog will be field reports on these two programs from Road Scholar participants.
